Miscellaneous verses, [ca. 1730-1742].

Manuscript, in multiple hands, of 12 primarily satirical entries in both verse and prose. The volume contains a satirical poem titled The seven wise men of England, which mocks such figures as Robert Walpole, Earl Cowper, and the Duke of Devon; other poems include: A receipt to make a pretty fellow; A receipt to make a fire; A receipt to make a modern poet; Judgment of Hercules by Robert Lowth; and Le feu de joye: or, a brief description of two most glorious victories obtain'd by Her Majesty's forces and those of her allies over the French and Bavarians in July and August 1704 by "A British Muse." The prose pieces consist of: A charge deliver'd by Judge Page to the Grand Jury of the county of --; A character of Mr. Hastings taken from the 1st Earl of Shaftsbury's memoirs (a manuscript) by Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper; and copies of two letters written by Peter Walker which give moral and financial instruction to his children and grandchildren.

Robert Lowth was born in England on November 27, 1710, the youngest son of Dr. and Mrs. William Lowth. He entered Winchester College in 1722 and received a scholarship to New College, Oxford, in 1729. Lowth graduated from Oxford taking the B.A. in 1733 and the M.A. in 1737. In 1735 Lowth had entered the Anglican Church and was appointed vicar of Overton, Hampshire. He remained at this position until 1741 when he was appointed professor of poetry at Oxford.
